Scenic Cruises Await
The Benthara River is shrouded in untouched mangrove swamps that are home to several species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. One of the more sought-after experiences in Bentota is a cruise along the tranquil river.
Explore the Deep Blue
The clear blue waters of the ocean in Bentota make it, arguably, one of the best beaches in the south west coast of the island. The vibrant reef and marine life here make it a great place to snorkel and scuba dive. In addition to that, you could engage in some exhilarating water sports, such as water skiing, jet skiing, or even banana boating.
An Ancient Place of Worship
Although it’s better known for its beaches, the town of Bentota also possesses quite an illustrious history that goes back to the time of the ancient kingdoms. The Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the more ancient temples in the southern coast of the island. The highlights here are the entrance and the main dagoba. The latter holds relics of great value, including the sacred tooth relic of Anubuddha Maha Kassyapa Arahat, who was a disciple of the Lord Buddha.
The Secret Garden
Located a few kilometres away from the town of Bentota lies a pristine piece of landscaping, designed by Bevis Bawa, who was the brother of renowned local architect Geoffrey Bawa. Built in 1929, the Brief Garden is one of those hidden wonders on the southern coast that perfectly combines man-made structures with the tropical beauty of the island. The garden is a lovely place to enjoy a quiet and romantic stroll with your partner.
