British Garrison Cemetery
The British Garrison Cemetery is located in the middle of the city of Kandy, just behind the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The final resting place for many colonial era British officials and their families, it is one of the few cemeteries in the whole of Sri Lanka that is solely dedicated to foreigners who passed away on the island. It was established in 1817 and was officially closed for burials in 1873. The cemetery was restored in 1998 and is now maintained by a private group of British individuals. A walk through the cemetery, hopefully accompanied by the caretaker, can be a rather interesting and insightful experience.
