Colombo withYour Significant Other
The metropolitan city of Colombo, with its many attractions and events, can also prove to be a pretty romantic destination if you are travelling with your significant other. From couple’s massages to candlelit dinners on the beach, here’s a list of the most romantic experiences Colombo has to offer.
Dining
It can’t get more romantic than sharing a candlelit dinner with your loved one, under a starry night sky, with the sound of the ocean nearby. The Mount Lavinia Hotel, which has its own intriguing story of romance, has a charming beachside restaurant that serves delectable seafood. The staff at the Seafood Cove will be happy to accommodate your request to enjoy a romantic meal on the beach.
The beautiful, seafront, Galle Face Hotel is another lovely spot to enjoy a special meal with your significant other. Enjoy a fancy evening of great wines paired with excellent food at the 1864 fine dining restaurant, or find yourself transported to Havana at the Cuban themed King of the Mambo restaurant and bar.
If you like a more traditional Sri Lankan gastronomic experience, head over to the Curry Leaf restaurant at the Hilton Colombo, where you will be spoilt for choice with the large local village style dinner buffet. The Nuga Gama at Cinnamon Grand offers a great Sri Lankan buffet, with an even more wonderful ambience. The restaurant is built around a 200-year old Banyan tree and surrounded by traditional wattle and daub huts. Both options are great for a special night with your partner.
The Paradise Road Gallery Café is a great dining option, if you would prefer not to eat at a hotel. Located within the former office space of famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the Gallery Café serves local and international cuisine. The café has a delightful dessert menu, which includes over 30 tempting choices. The ambience created by the charming architecture and décor is truly special.
Drinks and Dancing
Colombo has a number of great bars that offer stunning views of the setting sun, while you sip on a cold beer or cocktail. Check out Ce La Vi Colombo on the rooftop of the Kingsbury Hotel, Kaema Sutra restaurant and bar at the Shangri-La Colombo and ON14 at the OZO Colombo.
If you would like to bust some moves on the dancefloor, head over to The Curve Bar on Park Street or Rhythm & Blues dance and nightclub if you belong to the 80s or 90s era. If you want to dance to today’s Billboard hits, you should probably head over to Re.Pub.Lk behind the Dutch Hospital Precinct, Amuseum at Green Lanka Towers or Love Bar at Flamingo House.
Cooking Tour
There are many hosts that offer local cooking experiences in the city of Colombo. It’s a great experience to share with a loved one, especially if you are both foodies! A simple search will direct you to the relevant hosts.
Culture and Heritage
A trip to a foreign land is never complete if you don’t explore its culture and history. And it’s an advantage to wander around the heritage sites of a city with someone who is willing to take some Instagram worthy pictures of you! Visit the historical places of worship that give insight into the city’s multicultural heritage, museums that house historic artefacts and of course the Pettah and Colombo Fort areas.
Souvenirs
Memorialise your trip with your partner with a trinket. Shop at one of the many souvenir stores in the city, such as Barefoot Gallery and Paradise Road. Should you be looking for more exclusive trinkets, do check out the many jewellery stores in the city and find an elegantly designed piece studded with Ceylon gemstones.
Relaxation
Exploring a tropical city can prove to be rather tiring. Why not rejuvenate with a relaxing ayurvedic massage? Drop in at the Angsana Spa at Cinnamon Grand or at any of the Spa Ceylon branches dotted around the city, and treat yourselves to a special couple’s massage.
