Galle Face Green Promenade
Head out to the Galle Face Green Promenade as the sun begins to set over the city of Colombo. Located along the coast, in the heart of Colombo, the Galle Face Green Promenade is a wide-open space that overlooks the Indian Ocean. The promenade functions as a park for hundreds of families who flock there every evening to fly kites and enjoy picnics.
Every evening, the promenade comes alive with a number of carts and stalls selling colourful toys and trinkets, and of course the most delicious Colombo street food ranging from ‘isso vadey’ (similar to a prawn cake), achcharu (spicy pickled fruit), hand cut cassava chips, fried seafood, ‘kotthu rotti’ (mix of rotti, meat and vegetables) to sweets like ‘bombai mutai’ (hand pulled candy). You would not regret spending an evening enjoying the many flavours of Colombo, sitting by the ocean, watching a stunning sunset.
If all the street food and activity has you feeling a little overwhelmed, you can head over to Breeze Barracuda, a casual restaurant serving more international fare such as pizzas, burgers, salads, smoothies and coffee. Or head over to the Cuban themed King of the Mambo restaurant and bar at the nearby Galle Face Hotel, and enjoy some South American inspired food while you sip on a cocktail or two!
The Galle Face Green Promenade is also used for state Independence Day celebrations, as well as for musical concerts and large-scale corporate activities. The venue maybe overcrowded on days such as these, so it might be best to check with your local contact if you don’t want to be hassled.
